Dear families,
It has been nearly three weeks since I stepped into the role of Superintendent of Schools for the Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District. During this time, I have had the privilege of visiting our schools and meeting the students, staff and families who make up our community. I have seen firsthand the care with which staff across the district support students and their learning and I am so appreciative to be part of this great team.
Our district’s mission is to support all individuals in their development as successful learners and as respectful, caring and responsible members of society. Our vision is for every individual to feel valued and for all learners to reach their potential. Since I began my new role on February 26, I have seen these values reflected everywhere I look: in schools, in classrooms, in hallways, in discussions about the future, and in the recently released 2022/23 completion rates.
I look forward to continuing this work, getting to know students, staff and families, and engaging with the many partner groups and organizations who support the work of our district. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your child’s life.
As we head into spring break, I hope you are able to take some time to relax from the daily routine of school, spend time together with your child and enjoy the natural beauty of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. I know I am looking forward to exploring the many parks and trails in both communities.
If you are travelling over spring break, please see the below message from the Ministry of Education and Child Care and the Fraser Health Authority.
Sincerely,
Teresa Downs
Superintendent of Schools
Measles Vaccinations Prior to Spring Break Travel
Measles is a contagious, airborne virus. There is a high risk of measles cases being brought back to B.C. due to ongoing measles outbreaks globally and decreasing vaccination coverage rates in Canada. Public Health Agency of Canada and the Provincial Health Officer and the BC Centre for Disease Control have issued statements advising individuals to check their measles immunization records and to vaccinate against measles prior to Spring Break travel. Vaccine appointments can be booked through local public health units.
