Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District Continuing Education student Alicia Wotherspoon recently won first prize in the BCTF Adult Education Writing Contest.
Wotherspoon, who takes classes at School District No. 42’s Riverside Centre and will be graduating in June, said she was pleasantly surprised to learn that she’d won the contest.
“I was so shocked. I don’t think it really sunk in until I had hung up the phone. You couldn’t wipe the smile off my face for the rest of the day,” she said.
The writing contest was open to current and former Continuing Education students from across BC.
Wotherspoon’s teacher, Dale Hardy, said he was extremely proud of his student: “Every semester I may have one or two students whose writing is exemplary. She fits that category. As she is my student in both English 12 and Social Justice 12 I see her through multiple filters: academic, empathetic, and passionate. She is a gift to her cohort and her teachers.”
