Pitt Meadows teachers promote Literacy Week

April 13, 2016

Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows Times

Three Pitt Meadows Secondary teachers are trying to dispel the notion that reading is not fun with their second annual Literacy Week school event scheduled for April 18 to 22.

The theme of the week is “Read the Word, Read the World,” which includes various forms of literacy, from environmental to digital and physical, to educational. More than a dozen literacy events and activities are planned to engage students, bring up their comprehension skills, and hopefully allow for some fun, as well.

“The basic idea is to get kids excited about reading and literacy in general. We try to do it school-wide to get every subject area to be thinking about how they use reading and literacy in their classrooms,” said Karen Thompson, an English and social studies teacher in the school.
