The exercise, which will begin at 1:30 p.m., will follow the Great British Columbia ShakeOut earthquake drill in which all schools participate every year. (more…)

Families in Maple Ridge’s east Albion neighbourhood can look forward to new classrooms to meet the future needs of the community, with the purchase of land for a new school.
“Every student in B.C. should have a classroom that allows them to learn and thrive, which is why our government is providing students the best learning experience possible in a safe and positive environment both here in Maple Ridge and all around the province,” said Premier John Horgan. “We’ve invested in 24 new or expanded schools, eight site purchases for future schools and 39 seismic upgrades or replacements, creating over 10,000 new student spaces throughout the province.”
Since September 2017, the Province has announced more than $620 million for new and expanded schools. Budget 2019 includes a record $2.7 billion for school capital projects, such as new schools, seismic upgrades and land purchases for future schools for B.C. students. (more…)

As you may know, Global Climate Strike rallies are being held across North America this upcoming Friday, September 27. These rallies are timed to coincide with the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York and are being organized online under the hashtag #FridaysForFuture.
In recent days, school districts have begun to acknowledge the likelihood of student participation in these rallies, and to formally offer their support for this call to action.
Here in the Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District, personal and social responsibility is one of our key defining values. We are committed as a district to acting as responsible stewards within our community, and we seek to develop the leadership and citizenship capacity of all learners. (more…)
The use of vaping products by youth and young adults is on the rise. To help parents have informed conversations with their children about the health risks of vaping, Fraser Health, BC Lung Association and Vancouver Coastal Health have created a package of resources and information.
You can download the Vaping Prevention Toolkit free from the BC Lung Association. The toolkit includes a Vaping Product Education for Parents Guide.
The guide includes tips on how to start conversations with youth, potential questions that parents may be asked by their child, and responses to each question.

Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District No. 42 has developed a School Safety Notification System in collaboration with Ridge Meadows RCMP to keep students, staff and volunteers safe. The opening of c̓əsqənelə Elementary will be delayed until September 25, 2019 to allow time for thorough testing of the new building’s mechanical systems.
