BC Government’s measles vaccine catch-up program update

April 29, 2019 4:44 PM

Dear Parents/Guardians and Caregivers,

RE: BC Government’s measles vaccine catch-up program for school-aged children from April to June 2019 – UPDATE

The measles vaccine catch-up program for school-aged children is currently underway. As we continue to see measles cases throughout the Lower Mainland, and as government prepares for mandatory reporting of vaccines to schools, we are taking steps to ensure your child’s vaccines are up to date.

We are reviewing student records to determine who has been vaccinated. Fraser Health is mailing letters directly to households for those students that are not up to date with measles vaccines.

Due to the large volume of students, it will take several weeks to contact all affected students. It is not necessary to request your child’s records at this time. (more…)

Day of Mourning: SD42 honours those who have lost their lives in work-related incidents

April 25, 2019 3:31 PM

In Canada, the national Day of Mourning is observed on April 28 each year to remember workers who have been killed, injured or suffered occupational disease on the job.

Last year in British Columbia 131 workers lost their lives to workplace injury or disease.

On Friday, April 26 at 11am the Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District will observe one minute of silence to recognize those who have been injured by accidents or disease and mourn those who have died from workplace accidents or disease.

Please join us in paying tribute to fallen workers and raising awareness about creating healthy and safe workplaces. For more information about the Day of Mourning in BC, visit: http://www.dayofmourning.bc.ca/

BC Government’s Measles Immunization Catch-Up Program For School-Aged Children

April 2, 2019 3:33 PM

Letter from Dr. Shovita Padhi, Medical Health Officer and Medical Director, Fraser Health

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

As you may have heard, the BC Government has announced an initiative to catch up all school-aged children (K-12) with measles vaccines. This is an opportunity for unimmunized and under-immunized children to catch-up on their vaccinations. There is no measles outbreak within our region; however, we are working with the province, our health-care partners and school districts to increase immunity amongst B.C.’s school-aged children.

Most people in Canada are protected against measles infections through immunizations. Two doses of either measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR) or measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella vaccine (MMRV) is 99 per cent effective at preventing measles. Children receive one dose of MMR at 12 months of age followed by one dose of MMRV starting at four years of age. For more information on measles and measles containing vaccine, please visit https://www.fraserhealth.ca/health-topics-a-to-z/immunizations/diseases-and-immunizations/measles#.XJKezeaouUl  (more…)

Important Notification

March 14, 2019 3:32 PM

Dear parents/guardians,

I am writing to let you know that the RCMP have advised the Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District that criminal charges have been laid by the Crown against Maple Ridge resident, Daniel Jon Olson.

The charges are very serious and deeply concerning. Mr. Olson is a child and youth care worker in the school district and has worked in a number of our elementary and secondary schools over the course of his employment. While we have no first-hand knowledge about the charges, we are informing all our families out of an abundance of caution so that parents/guardians can direct any information they may have about this matter directly to the Ridge Meadows RCMP.

I want to assure you that the safety and well-being of our students is our number one priority; as such, Mr. Olson has been on unpaid leave since the time the school district was notified of his arrest.

For your information, I have included the RCMP news release below.

Sincerely,

Sylvia Russell
Superintendent of Schools

MRSS Annex Conversion

January 14, 2019 11:24 AM

The Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District has been experiencing increasing enrolment growth at the elementary level over the past couple of years. Last year’s restoration of the collective agreement language regarding class size and class composition has resulted in a full utilization of elementary school facilities ahead of the projected time line.

Current enrolment in Central Capital Zone elementary schools (the zone in which Maple Ridge Secondary is situated) already exceeds the operating capacity of these schools. The school district is forecasting that elementary enrolment will continue to increase over the next several years. The district is not forecasting that overall enrolment increases at the secondary level will exceed available capacity in its facilities over the next 10 years. (more…)
