Dear families,

It has been nearly three weeks since I stepped into the role of Superintendent of Schools for the Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District. During this time, I have had the privilege of visiting our schools and meeting the students, staff and families who make up our community. I have seen firsthand the care with which staff across the district support students and their learning and I am so appreciative to be part of this great team.

Our district’s mission is to support all individuals in their development as successful learners and as respectful, caring and responsible members of society. Our vision is for every individual to feel valued and for all learners to reach their potential. Since I began my new role on February 26, I have seen these values reflected everywhere I look: in schools, in classrooms, in hallways, in discussions about the future, and in the recently released 2022/23 completion rates. Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District (SD42) six-year graduation completion rates increased once again for 2022/23, continuing a multi-year trend of overall improvement. 

• B.C. Students: The SD42 six-year completion rate for B.C. students for the 2022/23 school year was 98.1%, exceeding the provincial range of 83-94%. These results place SD42 as one of the top districts in the province with a graduating class of over 1,000 students. 

• Students with Indigenous Ancestry: The six-year completion rate for students with Indigenous ancestry was 90.3%, which is, once again, above the provincial average range of 68-85%.

• Students with Diverse Needs: Finally, the six-year completion rate for students with diverse needs for 2022/23 is 91.4%, well above the provincial average of 67-81%.

Pursuant to Section 1 of the British Columbia policy on half-masting and district flags policy, flags at district facilities will be flown at half-mast from today, Friday, March 1, 2024, until sunset on the day of the funeral (date to be determined) to honour the memory of the late Right Honourable Martin Brian Mulroney, who passed away on February 29, 2024.

Canadian Parents for French (CPF) is urgently looking for volunteers to reignite and represent its Ridge Meadows chapter.

These barriers can range from access to a school program, building, or school information, to the ability to receive a needed service or support. Online Grade 8 Transition Period registration is coming up for students going into Grade 8 next year. Registration opens on the Parent Portal at noon, on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, and closes 11:59 pm, Tuesday, February 27, 2024. 

Transfers After Deadline

If you do not register by the online registration deadline, you will need to complete a request under the Enrolment Requests – New; Transfer; Withdraw (2024/2025) school year. 

Grade 8 students who did not register during the Feb 13 – 27 registration period will be able to register on the Parent Portal starting noon, Wednesday, March 13, 2024, in the early enrolment period for the 2024/25 school year.

Registration for Late French Immersion and Wheelhouse opens online at noon, Wednesday, February 14, 2024. Registration will be via the Parent Portal. Please ensure you have created a Parent Portal account and have familiarized yourself with the platform well in advance of the registration date and time. Late French Immersion registration closes 11:59 p.m. on February 23, 2024. Registration for Wheelhouse will close once the program is at capacity.

You are invited to attend the Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District Trades Showcase event. This year promises to be even bigger and better. Attendees will include representatives from local, provincial, and national industries, including Seaspan, Parkland Refining and Supply, Bosa Construction, Bird Construction, Pitt Meadows Plumbing and Mechanical, Ozz Electric and many more. This in-person session, hosted at Thomas Haney Secondary School on Monday, January 29, 2024, will provide parents/guardians with practical, realistic, and effective strategies and approaches to keeping their children safe online.
