Outreach

Program Overview

Outreach Alternate Secondary (OAS), located at Maple Ridge Secondary School, is a district-wide alternate program designed for academically capable students aged 16 to 19 who are taking Grade 10, 11, and 12 courses. This program serves students from across the district who have fallen behind in their graduation programs, often due to past attendance challenges, and are now motivated to complete their Dogwood Diploma or Adult Graduation Diploma.

OAS provides a supportive environment to help students overcome barriers that may have hindered their success in mainstream schools. These barriers include, but are not limited to, poverty, mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression, schoolwork avoidance, bereavement, work commitments, sleep disorders, teen pregnancy, addiction issues, and feeling overwhelmed by traditional course loads.

Why choose OAS?

The Outreach model emphasizes personal responsibility and self-directed learning, providing students with the tools and support they need to succeed. By focusing on individual strengths and addressing past barriers, OAS helps students achieve their goals in a flexible, inclusive, and structured environment.

Unique features of OAS

Flexible Trimester System

OAS operates on a trimester system, making it the only high school in the district not following a linear timetable. This system allows for greater flexibility and provides opportunities for students to retake courses within the same academic year if needed.

Real-Time, Instructor-Led Classes

Unlike self-paced programs, OAS offers real-time, instructor-led classes tailored to meet the needs of individual students. Each student follows a customized schedule, selecting courses that align with their goals and fit their personal circumstances. This structure empowers students to take ownership of their education.

Student-Centered Approach

At the start of their journey, students complete entrance autobiographies and participate in interviews to identify past challenges and set future goals. With guidance from OAS staff, they develop personalized plans for success. Throughout the year, students meet one-on-one with staff three times to review progress, address challenges, and plan their path to graduation—the ultimate goal for all OAS students.

Inclusive and Accepting Community

The diverse student population at OAS fosters a highly accepting environment. Each student brings their own unique history, and there is a shared understanding that the past is in the past. OAS provides a fresh start, allowing students to focus on their present and future.

How the program works

Classroom Accountability

Students are required to complete all assignments during class time, as no homework is assigned. This structure helps address procrastination and ensures students remain accountable for their progress. By eliminating the option to defer assignments, students are encouraged to stay engaged and productive during class hours.

Graduation Pathways

In addition to the regular high school graduation program, OAS supports students over the age of 18 in completing their Adult Dogwood Diploma—a graduation program specifically designed for adult learners.
