Maple Ridge students get $3,000 donation to pursue robotics dreams

A few Thomas Haney Secondary School students got to step out of the classroom on Wednesday and take a field trip to Pitt Meadows Plumbing in order to participate in the Future of Work series put on by the company.

According to Pitt Meadows Plumbing’s marketing manager Sara Searle, this event series gives local students the opportunity to go behind the scenes and learn about how emerging new technology is being used to advance the construction industry.

As part of the Oct. 9 event, the Maple Ridge students were taken on a tour of the building to see the new automated Novarc Technologies AI-powered welding system, given a 3D printing demonstration, and talked to by a representative of the Maple Ridge-based TD Systems mechanical design company.The field trip wrapped up with the students receiving a $3,000 donation from Pitt Meadows Plumbing in order to help fund the custom-built robot that the group will be entering in the First Robotics Competition next year.

The 30-person student robotics team won the Innovation in Control Award with their robot at last year’s event and hopes to achieve even bigger success this year with their brand-new robot.
