Students at Maple Ridge school want drivers to think of them

Colourful tickets with illustrations by students at a Maple Ridge elementary school were handed out to drivers on Monday, Sept. 16, to remind them to ignore their phones and to slow down in school zones.

The Think Of Me campaign took place outside Yennadon Elementary where 95 tickets were created by the Grades 3 and 4 students for members of the Ridge Meadows RCMP to hand out.

Corp. Eric Obermayer with the Ridge Meadows RCMP traffic unit, and Const. Mathew Foote stopped vehicles driving along 232 Street outside the school to talk to drivers and give them a “ticket”.

Principal Gary Lozinski explained this is the first ever Think of Me campaign at the school, which is done in partnership with the Ridge Meadows RCMP and ICBC.

Corp. Eric Obermayer with the Ridge Meadows RCMP traffic unit said the program spreads the message about speed in school zones.

“It goes over really well with the public,” said Obermayer. “Instead of bad tickets, or negative tickets, this is a positive ticket. It is just a little reminder and thank you for everybody, all the drivers in the school zone.”
